In a wide and whispery forest full of tall, swaying trees, there lived a gentle donkey named Dilly. Dilly had big, soft ears, a fluffy grey coat, and the sweetest, most curious eyes you ever saw. Every morning, Dilly would walk slowly through the forest, sniffing the flowers and humming little songs to herself.
Not far away, beneath the shade of an old mango tree, lived a lion named Leo. Leo had a great golden mane that shimmered like the sun. But Leo was not mean or scary at all. He was actually quite sleepy most of the day, and very, very fond of telling stories.
The Day Leo Had a Funny Idea
One warm and golden afternoon, Leo padded softly through the trees until he found Dilly nibbling on some sweet green grass. Leo sat down beside her with a wide, whisker twitching grin.
“Dilly,” said Leo in his big, rumbling voice that was actually quite warm and friendly, “I have a wonderful idea. I know where the juiciest, yellowest mangoes in the whole forest grow. If you help me shake the tree, we can share every single one.”
Dilly wiggled her long ears thoughtfully. She had heard stories about lions before. But Leo’s eyes were kind, and his smile was honest. “Alright,” she said softly, “let us go together.”
Dilly’s Big, Brave Bray
They walked through the dappled sunshine until they reached the mango tree. It was tall and leafy, heavy with bright yellow fruits that smelled like honey and summer. But underneath the tree sat a group of noisy, chattering monkeys who had decided those mangoes were theirs.
Leo tried to roar, but the monkeys just laughed and threw little twigs at him. He tried to look fierce, but they only chattered louder. Poor Leo sat down and scratched his mane, quite puzzled.
Then Dilly had an idea of her own. She walked forward calmly, took a deep breath, and let out the longest, loudest, most thunderous HEE HAW the forest had ever heard. It echoed through every tree and bounced off every stone.
The monkeys squealed in surprise and scurried away in a flash, disappearing into the treetops. The forest went quiet. The mangoes swayed gently in the breeze.
Sharing is the Sweetest Thing
Leo looked at Dilly with the biggest, warmest smile. “Dilly,” he said gently, “that was the most magnificent thing I have ever seen. You were so brave and so clever!”
Dilly blushed beneath her grey fur. “I just used what I had,” she said quietly. Together, they shook the tree, and down tumbled the sweetest mangoes, one by one, soft and golden, landing in the cool grass.
They sat side by side, sharing every mango slice, listening to the birds sing above them. The sun was warm. The air was sweet. And two very different friends had learned something wonderful about each other.
A Happy Ending for Our Two Friends
After that day, Leo and Dilly became the very best of friends. Every morning, Dilly would hum her little songs, and Leo would listen happily. Every evening, Leo would tell his stories, and Dilly would wiggle her ears in delight. The other animals in the forest would come and sit with them too, and everyone lived together in the warmest, happiest way.
And so, just like the beloved donkey and the lion story that children have cherished for so many years, this gentle tale reminds us that real friendship has no rules about who is big or small, loud or quiet, brave or soft. In the heart of that sunny forest, a donkey and a lion showed the whole world that when we trust each other and share what we have, every day can feel just like a mango afternoon.
Moral of the Story: True friends lift each other up by sharing their gifts, not by hiding them.
