In a tiny little village far, far away, there lived a boy named Dick Whittington. Dick had rosy cheeks, muddy boots, and a heart full of the biggest dreams you could ever imagine.
He had heard a whisper, just a soft, gentle whisper on the wind, that said the streets of London were paved with gold. Oh, how his eyes sparkled when he heard that!
“I shall go,” said little Dick, tying his bundle to a stick. “I shall go and find my fortune.”
A Long and Dusty Road
Dick walked and walked, over hills and through meadows, until at last the big, busy city of London came into view. But oh dear, the streets were not gold at all. They were grey and wet and a little bit smelly.
Dick sat down on a cold doorstep, feeling very small and very tired. His tummy rumbled. His feet ached. A tear rolled slowly down his cheek.
But then, oh, what is that? A warm, fuzzy face pressed against his knee. It was a little ginger cat with soft golden eyes, purring like a tiny, rumbling rainstorm.
Dick Whittington and His Cat
Dick smiled his very first London smile. “Hello, little one,” he whispered. The cat blinked slowly and that, dear friends, is how cats say “I love you.”
Dick Whittington and his cat became the very best of friends. They found a kind merchant named Mr. Fitzwarren, who gave Dick a warm place to sleep and a little job to do. Dick swept and cleaned and worked with all his might.
But in his tiny room at night, the mice would scitter and scatter across the floor. It was the cat who helped! She chased every last mouse away with a swish of her tail and a proud little meow.
A Ship Sets Sail
One day, Mr. Fitzwarren said, “I am sending a ship to faraway lands to sell fine things. Would anyone like to put something on the ship?” Everyone had something to offer except poor Dick. All he had was his dear little cat.
“Take her,” Dick said quietly, stroking her soft ears one last time. “Maybe she can help someone, the way she helped me.” And with a tiny mew, the cat sailed away.
Dick felt very lonely after that. Nothing felt quite right. So one grey morning, he picked up his bundle and decided to walk home, back to the village, back to where he began.
The Bells of Bow
But just as he reached the top of Highgate Hill, the great bells of Bow Church began to ring, dong, dong, dong, and in their gentle chiming, Dick heard something magical.
The bells seemed to sing: “Turn again, Whittington! Turn again, Whittington, Lord Mayor of London!”
Dick stood very still. His heart went thump, thump, thump. Could it be? Could the bells really be speaking to him? He took a deep breath, turned around, and walked back to London with hopeful little steps.
A Wonderful Surprise
By and by, the ship came home from its faraway voyage. And what a story it carried! The ship had landed in a kingdom where the king’s palace was full of mice, cheeky, nibbling, naughty mice.
The king had never seen a cat before. He watched in wonder as Dick’s little cat pounced and played and chased every mouse away. The king laughed with delight. “I must have this wonderful creature!” he cried, and he paid a mountain of gold for her.
All of that gold now belonged to Dick. He was rich! He was truly, honestly, wonderfully rich.
The Lord Mayor and the Kind Heart
Dick used his gold wisely and kindly. He helped the poor. He mended broken things. He made London a little bit brighter and warmer for everyone around him.
The people of London loved him very much. And so it came to pass, just as the bells had sung, that Dick Whittington became the Lord Mayor of London. Not once, but three whole times!
He even found his cat again, brought safely back by the ship’s kind captain, and the two were never parted for long after that.
