The Mouse Who Made a Cozy Home Story

A Very Empty Acorn Cup

At the edge of a meadow, tucked between two old tree roots, a small mouse named Fig found an acorn cup.

It was perfectly round and just the right size. But it was empty. Bare. A little bit echoey when Fig tapped it with one tiny paw.

“This could be my home,” said Fig quietly, turning around in a slow circle inside it. “But it doesn’t feel like one yet.”

So Fig set off across the meadow to find the things that would make it just right.

Gathering Good Things

First, Fig found a tuft of soft sheep’s wool caught on a bramble. It was fluffy and warm and smelled of sunshine. Fig carried it all the way home and laid it on the floor of the acorn cup.

Next, Fig spotted a fallen petal from a wild rose, pale pink and curved like a tiny boat. It made a perfect pillow.

Then came a twist of dry grass to weave into a little doormat, and a smooth white pebble that caught the light and made the walls glow softly in the afternoon sun.

“Better,” said Fig, whiskers twitching happily. “But still something is missing.”

The Last and Most Important Thing

Fig sat very still and thought hard. The wool was soft. The petal was cosy. The pebble glowed. But the acorn cup was still quiet in a way that felt a little lonely.

Just then, Fig’s neighbor, plump little vole named Clover, came padding along the path with a walnut shell full of blackberry jam.

“I brought this for your new home,” said Clover shyly. “Every home needs something sweet.”

They sat together on the little doormat, sharing the jam as the stars began to appear one by one in the darkening sky. The meadow grew still. A cricket sang somewhere nearby.

“Ah,” said Fig softly. “That’s it. That’s what was missing.”

The Mouse Who Made a Cosy Home curled up that night on the soft wool, head resting on the rose petal pillow, tummy warm with blackberry jam. Outside, the wind hummed low through the meadow grass. And Fig fell fast asleep, smiling, because home is not just the things you gather, but the friends you share them with.
