Why You May Need A Dot Physical Exam?

If you’re a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) driver, you may need a medical examiner’s certificate to comply with FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) regulations.

After you pass the test, you receive a Medical Examiner’s Certificate, which is valid for up to 2 years and helps maintain your driving license. It shows that you’re physically, mentally and medically fit to operate large vehicles safely.

These exams are necessary to reduce the risks of accidents caused by medical conditions. The exam helps detect health issues like heart conditions, sleep apnea, and vision or hearing impairments that could interfere with safe driving.

Who Needs A DOT Physical Exam?

You may need a DOT physical test if you:

  • Transport hazardous material in your vehicle that needs a placard (a small card or sign to identify the class of material inside the vehicle)
  • Drive a vehicle of more than 10,000 pounds or 5 tons.
  • Drive a vehicle that carries more than eight passengers.
  • Employed to drive vehicles that carry more than 15 people.

If you fall into any of the categories mentioned above, you can visit Family Urgent Care in Indiana or Illinois for a DOT physical exam.

  • If you’ve had a stroke or brain tumor, you may also need a certificate from your neurologist.

What Does A DOT Exam Include?

Healthcare providers at Family Urgent Care explain you each and every step of the process to ensure that you feel confident, informed and fully prepared for your DOT physical.

They begin by discussing your medical history or any existing medical conditions you have. Next, they take the following tests:

DOT Physical

Description

Vision Test

A driver who holds a commercial driver’s license must have a minimum of 20/40 visual acuity in both eyes. This can be corrected using eyeglasses or contact lenses.

Hearing Test

This test is done to see if you can hear soft sounds from five feet or less.

Blood pressure and Pulse

The provider then checks your blood pressure and pulse to evaluate your cardiovascular health.

Urine Test

As part of a DOT physical, you may also need a urine test to assess any underlying medical conditions.

Physical Examination

The provider checks your body functions, such as eyes, nose, throat, lungs, abdomen and extremities.

All these steps will allow the provider to assess your overall health status and look for any signs or symptoms that could affect your ability to drive a CMV.
